Hotter summers and water stress management.
Summer of 2024 has been severe with heat waves and records of higher temperatures. Having 17% of global population with only 4% of water resources raising heat is going to create severe water stress.
Tackling water stress
- Though heat have an institutional mechanism, with I.M.D. warnings, State advisories, water stress do not.
- India needs a comprehensive policy to ensure water security in the long term.
- Rains have intensified and is concentrated in certain Tahsils of India. It needs to be trapped using embankments, greening and slowing the run off.
- As the largest ground water extractor, India should continuously monitor ground water in all Tahsils and warn Panchayats.
- Free electricity and free water should be discouraged.
- A scheme to build rain water harvesting infrastructure should be started in all Government buildings.
