Arctic glacial retreat

  Recently IPCC informed the world that over 2/3rd glaciers are receding in the Arctic faster than expected

Reasons

  • Sustained global warming that is around 1.5 degree above industrial revolution level
  • Increasing ocean temperatures
  • Increase industrial activity around arctic
  • Polar ozone depletion
Impact
  • Changing pattern of monsoon and other atmospheric systems
  • Extinction of Arctic specimens and decreased biodiversity
  • Opening up polar trade routes like, Northern sea route
  • Scramble for Arctic resources
     
 Accelerated global warming have potential to make Arctic ice free. It could have lasting geopolitical, socioeconomic and climatic impact.
