Dairy sector of India

India is the world's largest milk producer and have the largest number of cattle.

White revolution

  • It was achieved via the leadership of Dr. Varghese Kurian
  • Through milk co-operatives like Anand and Karnataka co-operatives
  • Artificial insemination based on high milk yielding varieties was used
  • Improvements in cattle feed, shelter and care
  • Processing of milk and milk products; Amul, Nandini, Milma

Productivity concerns

  • India's productivity is low compared to world standards
  • Heat, low quality of feed, resilience of cows etc contribute to it
  • Also processing losses affect it
  • Skill of cow farmers, knowledge and technology are great barriers

Way forward

  • Usage of latest technology,e.g., cattle farms with air-cooling, filter water and music
  • Improvement of feeder crops
  • Leveraging indigenous breeds; Rashtriya Gokul Mission
  • World wide marketing; e.g., investments from EFTA. countries
  • One health approach
India needs to increase it's milk productivity to increase farm income, export revenue and create sustainable development.
