Food security

Food security could be defined as access to adequate and nutritious food through out year and in future.

Different dimensions of food security and India's status

  • Food production; India produces surplus quantity of food and is a net exporter
  • Access; Around 10% of Indians still struggle to food as per Government data. This is due to in adequate purchasing power and socioeconomic barriers
  • Nutrition: India struggles most here with around 30% stunting, 50% women Anemia, lack of micro nutrients etc. (NFHS)
  • Sustainability: 2/3 rd of India is climate vulnerable and faces serious sustainability issues. Including cultivation of water intensive crops
India needs serious policy measures to ensure food access, nutrition and sustainability. Schemes like PMGKY, POSHAN, Millet promotion etc should be expanded.
