John Locke

"The end of law is, not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge freedom" - John Locke.

In this quote Locke is explaining the true purpose of law.

  • Law is to restrict freedom so that everyone can enjoy it, e.g., traffic rules ensure everyone can access the road
  • Sometimes law ensures one does not engender freedom of others, e.g., laws against crime
  • There are laws that empower people, e.g., transgender rights act
  • Laws also ensure resources are distributed fairly, e.g., national exam act
  • They also ensure different communities co-exist together, e.g., constitutional law, election laws etc.
Hence true purpose of law is to ensure full expression of the potential of an individual without transgressions from anarchy, marginalization or lack of resources.
