John Locke
"The end of law is, not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge freedom" - John Locke.
In this quote Locke is explaining the true purpose of law.
- Law is to restrict freedom so that everyone can enjoy it, e.g., traffic rules ensure everyone can access the road
- Sometimes law ensures one does not engender freedom of others, e.g., laws against crime
- There are laws that empower people, e.g., transgender rights act
- Laws also ensure resources are distributed fairly, e.g., national exam act
- They also ensure different communities co-exist together, e.g., constitutional law, election laws etc.
