Space tourism

Success of Virgin Galactic, Space X and ISRO show space tourism is not fiction anymore.

Challenges

  • It could be costly and only affordable to rich
  • CO2 emissions
  • High energy use
  • It requires the efforts of our best minds
  • Erratic policy priorities and cost overruns, e.g., Boeing's space mission.

Way forward

  • Increased research to reduce cost, CO2 emissions and energy
  • Researchers should be freed after meeting goals
  • CSR and benefit sharing; including technology developed, e.g., responsible AI
  • Space policy formulation with clear guidelines
  • Use of renewable energy, e.g., green hydrogen

Space tourism needs clear policy guidelines to minimize resources used, meet social responsibility and enhance research impact.
