Water needs

  Water is an essential resource for human life without which human life can not sustain.

Government initiatives for water

  • PM Jal Jeevan Yojana
  • PMKSY; Per drop more crop
  • National Mission for Clean Ganga and Namami Ganga

Issues in quantity and quality

  • 2/3rd of India suffer from groundwater depletion
  • Most of the states above tropic of cancer experience prevalence of heavy metal poisoning
  • Severe heat and flood in Southern states reducing quality

Way forward

  • Rain water harvesting mission to replenish ground water on a war footing
  • Dedicated department to study, publish and suggest policy regarding essential resources like air, water, food and housing
  • Completion of JJM with water quality testing infrastructure and cost sharing
India needs to address ground water depletion, heavy metal poisoning and urban water issues immediately, to fullfill SDG 6.
