Transitioning to fossil fuels

India have committed to be carbon neutral by 2070

Challenges for transition

  • Established infrastructure overwhelmingly support fossil fuels.
  • Prohibitory initial cost of electric entities, e.g., Tata Nexon car, petrol is priced at 8 Lakh while E.V. cost 15.
  • Lack of technology access, most is imported from China, Taiwan, South Korea etc.
  • Low funding; C.E.E.W. says, India needs in excess of 10 trillion to go carbon neutral.

Way forward

  • India needs to diversify it's energy mix including nuclear, LNG and Green Hydrogen.
  • Global collaborations like OWOSOG, ISA, BIMSTEC energy forum...
  • Decentralize solar mission encouraging every household to contribute to the energy grid.
  • Creating additional carbon sinks around energy projects and targeting most polluting sectors like transportation for electrification.
Developmental process requires additional energy sources. This have to come balanced with the sustainability requirements.
