Transitioning to fossil fuels
India have committed to be carbon neutral by 2070
Challenges for transition
- Established infrastructure overwhelmingly support fossil fuels.
- Prohibitory initial cost of electric entities, e.g., Tata Nexon car, petrol is priced at 8 Lakh while E.V. cost 15.
- Lack of technology access, most is imported from China, Taiwan, South Korea etc.
- Low funding; C.E.E.W. says, India needs in excess of 10 trillion to go carbon neutral.
Way forward
- India needs to diversify it's energy mix including nuclear, LNG and Green Hydrogen.
- Global collaborations like OWOSOG, ISA, BIMSTEC energy forum...
- Decentralize solar mission encouraging every household to contribute to the energy grid.
- Creating additional carbon sinks around energy projects and targeting most polluting sectors like transportation for electrification.
